A:  A real estate investment trust (REIT) is a company that owns and most often operates income producing real estate.  In the case of CatchMark, the real estate is timberlands. CatchMark both owns and operates its timberlands.

In order to qualify as a REIT, a company must have most of its business tied to real estate and pay out at least 90 percent of its taxable income annually as distributions to shareholders.
